Map of Free WiFi in Galway

I’m moving house this weekend, and it might take a couple of weeks to get broadband set up in the new place. In the meantime, I’ll be relying on the kindness of strangers. Couldn’t find anything like this online, so I put together a map of free WiFi hotspots in Galway.

It’s a bit sparse at the moment - send me an email or leave a comment if you know of any more that should be included.

Update: I’ve added a couple more suggested points to the map.

James Corbett has come up with the idea of combining a number of feeds like this to create an Open Irish Directory of hotspots and other amenities. If you’re interested in helping out by providing some data about your local area (which requires almost no technical expertise), contact James.

Oops: Should be working ok in Internet Explorer now.

This is a great idea Emmett and I’m bound to make use of those hotspots next time I’m in Galway. Thanks! I’m going to do the same for Limerick.

BTW, it would be great if you could also use the free OPML Manager (www.opmlmanager) to build an outline list (or directory) of these hotspots for inclusion in the Open Irish Directory. Email me if you’d like more information.

[...] Cloudlands points us to this blog entry at thoughtwax where the author links to amap of free wifi spots in Galway he’s put together. There’s also talk of putting one of these together for the whole country, which would be mega cool. No Votes Yet  [...]

hey, do u know if there is any list of wi-fi spots for castlebar, co. mayo? and is there any software u can use to pick up radio waves with wi-fi? (the wireless on my laptop is going to waste, i need to use it)

  5. emmetc Says:

I don’t personally know where there might be hotspots in Castlebar - you could try the local library and cafés for a start. If you do manage to find some, think about adding them to the Open Irish Directory that James mentions above.

AFAIK, it’s not possible to receive regular AM/FM radio signals using a wireless card - someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

As an aside, anyone interested in using radio waves as a data broadcast medium (such as daisychaining network cards (which can broadcast as well as receive!) to create blanket wifi) might like to check out http://del.icio.us/thoughtwax/fm for some links.

hi there…apologies for the studpidity of this question, but how do you actually use these “free wiFi” sites in galway with just a laptop & a network card? Thanks a mill!

  7. emmetc Says:

Hi nicola - yes, if you’ve got a network card on your laptop, it should detect the wifi signal automatically. Just connect to it and you’ll be online.

Hi Emmet - great initiative. Just to let you know that I think at the Mocha Beans locations you have to pay for the wireless connection, but I’ve a vague memory that they were providing it free for a period of time upon spending a certain amount in their shop. All the Mocha Beans locations/franchises are up for sale now, so I don’t know how it will be managed in the future.

Their WiFi is handled by BitBuzz, and as you’ll see from that link they have seven locations in Galway (including one in Oranmore). There are a couple of hotspots there you can add to your map.

Also, the new G Hotel at Wellpark in Galway claims to offer “complimentary wireless throughout the G.” I guess that means you can go into one of their funky rooms on the ground floor, order a very expensive coffee or drink, and open up your laptop and plug in. It might even work from the car park below - if you do try it out, let me know if it works.

is this not being updated anymmore? like 2005 is a long time ago! what about the college?

  10. emmetc Says:

I don’t live in Galway any more but I’ll try to keep the map updated as people leave comments here. If you drop some more info about the college wifi (which college? open to anyone?) I’ll add it in.
