[...] Come home and make this place poor again: Here we are, crashing headlong into a bright new era where we’ve got all this choice and freedom and opportunity (and don’t get me wrong, this is certainly A Good Thing). But when we all become busy, successful city-dwellers, we miss out on the interactions that slow-paced country life affords us. [...]

[...] In a way, it shows a certain sense of maturity in videogames, an ability to move beyond the bigger, faster, stronger approach. I’m not sure what progress is, but I’m pretty sure it isn’t linear. These very same things happen at different stages in fashion and in literature, and in film and software and music and art and architecture and living and pretty much any other form of culture I can think of. I think it means that the medium is breathing. [...]

[...] I was reminded of the book again recently when I read the similarly-structured Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino, and decided to re-read it. So, I’m going to read a chapter during each of the twenty-eight days of February, and while I’m at it, publish each chapter to a blog each day (the book is in the public domain). Follow along by subscribing to the RSS feed and taking a few minutes out each day to slow down and reflect. [...]

i like this piece Emmet. i think its all the more relevant as our country becomes more multicultural. This, too, is making us question our own national identity more.
I think or rather hope, the memories of the older, poorer Ireland are still clear enough for everyone to take the good from that age and carry on these traditions.

It's an important discussion...Too many times such a statement is dismissed as sentimentality (as I did, when first hearing it).

I sat with my head in my hands recently boggling at how fast my life was moving in comparison with 2 years ago...It is a human urge to be able to work well, but work slowly.
