This is one of many incredible scenes in Gates of Heaven; the moment it's over, you're thinking it's ridiculously irrelevant and out of nowhere, but upon seeing the entire film it's apparent how it hinges on this scene--in the few minutes that Mrs. Rasmussen is in her front doorway rambling about everything, the film's conceptual aims become multivariate. Gates of Heaven is, at this point, less about pet cemetaries than it is about some necessity and desperation inherent in humanity--well, this among may other topics.

A magnificent film.
