I lived and worked in Morocco for four years when I was young. Two of our children were born there (another story) when Hassan II ruled the country as an absolute monarch, and as head of the local manifestation of Islam. In those days political opposition was not tolerated and opponents of the King could expect to be left to rot in a Saharan prison. There was no freedom of expression or press. Morocco was astoundingly beautiful in exactly the way your pictures have captured. But tourists were a novelty and fair game for touts and conmen. There was misery under the surface.
I have visited twice in the last few years. One notices the changes. Morocco has come a long way under the King's more liberal son: Much greater prosperity. improved transport and public health. The Royal family still rules with a rod of iron, but there is less flagrant injustice, fewer political prisoners. Tourists may not be annoyed by law.And the food is as ever, marvellous. As for the people, they remain friendly, tough, clever as ever. But poor. Best students I have ever had.

Hi there

Such great photos! I travel in Morocco a lot with my husband and we use online sites to book my accommodation in advance which has always worked for us. The best one I find is http://www.morocco-gateway.com as they are not an agent

Amazing images! You managed to capture the true essence of the wonderful places that you visited. No dunes though :) Your Marrakech pics look particularly good, because they reveal its hidden aspects, not just the tourist ones. Congratulations.

Hi! I'm a friend of Jillians. (Comment #5) ;)

I just visited her this March in Morocco with my Nikon D70. Here's a link to my flickr account and MY collection of Morocco photos.

I think yours are just great. You captured some wonderful moments that I had hoped to capture, and never caught.
